Elkhorn Book Project

A dedicated committee of Elkhorn community members has been working together to create a book showcasing the rich history of Elkhorn Public Schools.

This project began with an idea from Mark Wortman to highlight the impact and growth that the Elkhorn Public Schools District has had in the community—from a one-room log schoolhouse in 1856 to today’s 22 schools that stand among the most respected public school districts in the Midwest.

Members of the committee include Dr. Bary Habrock (EPS Superintendent), Steve Baker (former Superintendent), Dr. Roger Breed (former Superintendent), Pat McCoy (former English teacher), Kolleen Quinn Benjamin (third-generation EPS graduate and EPSF Volunteer of the Year), Penny Sander (former English/Journalism teacher), Katherine Buth (volunteer), Kaylee Paulsen (EPSF employee), Stacey Falk (EPSF Executive Director), and Kristine Gerber (journalist, historian, and educator with more than 25 years of experience in producing nonfiction books).

Project Description

The Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation in partnership with the Elkhorn Photo Club/Book Committee and in cooperation with the Elkhorn Historical Society, is developing a 144-page hardbound coffee table book combining compelling narrative text with hundreds of historic photographs.

The book will highlight:

  • Academics and educational innovation
  • Athletics and extracurricular activities
  • Fine arts, clubs, and student life
  • Traditions and community identity
  • The broader history of the Elkhorn community

This highly visual format will engage a wide audience—from students and educators to historians and lifelong Nebraskans.

Creation of the book is currently in process with a goal of distribution in Early November 2026
