Alumni Trivia Night 2024
More than 20 class years were represented at the second annual Alumni Trivia Night
What event brought together a large range of Elkhorn Public Schools alumni for a night of challenging trivia, high school memories, and good times? The second annual Alumni Trivia Night!
On Friday, April 5th, the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation Alumni program organized a general trivia night including fun categories such as sports, music, and Elkhorn! The host for the evening was Kathy Burney, PE teacher at Westridge Elementary and 1988 EHS alumna. The Class of 1973+ won again this year following a tie breaker question!
It was great to see a wide range of class years represented, including: 1973, 1974, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021
After trivia concluded, everyone gathered together for a group picture of all the attendees. Representing a multitude of class years, they are all proud to call themselves alumni! We can’t wait to see this event grow from year to year!
Social Media Speaker
Dr. Twenge presents: “Parenting and Guiding the Smartphone Generation”
On April 2nd, the Elkhorn Public Schools district welcomed Dr. Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University, for her presentation: “Parenting and Guiding the Smartphone Generation.” Following her insightful presentation, there was a panel composed of Dr. Twenge, Creighton Volleyball coach and EPS parent Kirsten Bernthal Booth, EPS high school counselor Martha Dowd, and several EPS students.
Dr. Twenge’s presentation highlighted the similarities and differences between the various generations, including Baby Boomers (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), Millennials (1980-1994), Gen Z (1995-2012), and Alphas/Polars (2013-2029). She explained, “Generations happen because cultures change.” She noted that each generation has its own challenges. For current teens, the emergence and widespread use of smartphones and associated apps have had a significant impact on their mental health.
In an effort to guide parents of teens, she encouraged parents to prioritize sleep, enforce rules that keep kids safe, and reframe the smartphone, which means: “The smartphone needs to be a tool we use, not a tool that uses us,” said Dr. Twenge.
The Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation funded this speaker through our Partnership & Alignment Committee. The goal of this committee is to be more aligned with the strategic goals of the school district. Other approved projects include a teacher cohort, middle school reading incentives, and high school engineering curriculum.
“The smartphone needs to be a tool we use, not a tool that uses us,” said Dr. Twenge.
Battle of the Books 2024
EPS Elementary Students Engage in Literary Competition
In the spirit of March Madness, the Elkhorn Public Schools elementary schools hosted their own bracket: the Battle of the Books! The district-wide battle took place on April 8, 2024, after school. Sagewood, Spring Ridge, Skyline, and Hillrise Elementary hosted the other schools for the book-based competitions. The 1st and 2nd place winners from each of the competition sites earned medals paid for by the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation! We are proud to be part of this event because it encourages and celebrates reading at our elementary schools!
The Battle of the Books competitions began in the Elkhorn District in the late 1990s, and they continue to be a fun event for our elementary students. Each competition site had a different list of books, including The Tale of Despereaux, Hoot, Among the Hidden, Hatchet, The Lightning Thief, Number the Stars, Because of Winn Dixie, Because of Mr. Terupt, and many other great books!
Robyn Dallegge, Library Media Specialist at Manchester Elementary and district coordinator of Battle of the books, answered a few questions about these exciting literary battles!
- How did you get involved in Battle of the Books? How many years have you been helping? I have been a part of Battle of the Books for over 20 years. I was a building sponsor, first at Hillrise and then at Manchester for a long time. For the past several years, I have been the district coordinator of Battle of the Books.
- How do students get chosen for this event and how do they prepare for this competition? Battle of the Books is offered to all 4th and 5th-grade students in each elementary building, and students choose if they want to participate or not. Students form 4-member teams and attend monthly meetings from September – March. Each month, they read one title (from a prescribed list) and practice for the end-of-the-year competitions. They have to be able to answer questions about events from the books.
- What is your favorite part of this event? While the competition motivates students, my favorite part of Battle of the Books is that students are exposed to a wide variety of book titles and genres. They get to enjoy books they might not have chosen to read on their own.
- What is the benefit this event provides for students? Battle of the Books helps students develop reading fluency and comprehension skills. It also helps them build confidence in their reading and develop the habit of reading for enjoyment.
- Anything else you would like to share? As the district continues adding elementary schools, elementary librarians and teachers have prioritized Battle of the Books (with financial help from the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation).

Foundation Year in Review 2023
Watch this video for a brief overview of the Elkhorn Public Schools programs, events & revenue generated at the events for our programs, and our alumni program.
Classroom Grants
The Foundation’s Golf Fore Grants Tournament on June 5, 2023, raised $55,000 for the classroom grants program. During this year’s tournament, we highlighted Laurie Davidson’s “Flip Flop Book Swap” classroom grant that gave each student at Westridge at least one book to take home over the summer vacation.
Laurie’s grant is just one of 76 EPSF Classroom Grants totaling $140,000 that were awarded at all 20 Elkhorn Public Schools during the 2023-2024 school year.
Scholarship Program
The Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation continues to grow its Scholarship Program through Community Funded Scholarships and the ACHIEVE Scholarships. In the Spring of 2023, we awarded scholarships to Elkhorn Public Schools’ graduates worth over $550,000!
Currently, there are over 200 community-funded scholarships that will be awarded to EPS graduating seniors in 2024. The Foundation works with Elkhorn families and local businesses to award over $500,000 in scholarships every year. Applications for all EPSF scholarships are open from December 1st to February 1st, annually.
Math & Reading Intervention and Bids For Kids
The Elkhorn community helped the Foundation to raise over $71,000 at our annual Bids For Kids Auction in support of Math & Reading Intervention and Classroom Grants.
Foundation staff spoke with students and parents about the importance of Math & Reading Clubs! You can read more by following the link below.
“When you first find out that your child might not be keeping up in class, it can be kind of devastating as a parent because you just want them to succeed, but what I love about the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation is that they’ve stepped in to fill that gap.”
– Angela Bell, Parent of student receiving after-school math help
Kids in Need
We provide financial assistance to Elkhorn families in need, ensuring financial hardships do not stand in the way of our students’ physical, social, and emotional needs or their ability to achieve success within our schools.
Teacher Tuition Reimbursement
We encourage our Elkhorn teachers and teacher assistants to prioritize their continued education by providing partial tuition reimbursement. The Foundation provides thousands of dollars in tuition reimbursement every year.
Retired Teacher’s Luncheon 2023
The Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation hosted our annual luncheon for retired Elkhorn Public Schools teachers on Wednesday, November 15th at 11:30 am!
There are so many amazing changes happening in the Elkhorn Public Schools, and our guest speaker, Dr. Bary Habrock, spoke about the growth in the Elkhorn District! A catered lunch was provided with time to socialize and network with other retired Elkhorn Public Schools Teachers.
If you know other retired teachers that may want to attend in the future, please tell them to contact Ann Huddleston at ahuddleston@elkhornfoundation.org or (402) 289-1727 to be added to the list.
Would you like to keep in touch with other retired teachers and the Elkhorn Public Schools community? Please take a moment to fill out this short survey to receive updates and information on upcoming events: https://forms.gle/cm7MbrhCVTtNjtpq8

Super-Charge ENHS Scholarship Incentive Program
The Super-Charge ENHS Scholarship Incentive Program encourages the creation of new scholarship funds by non-school-related donors. To be eligible, the newly created scholarship fund must be dedicated to awarding an annual scholarship to an Elkhorn North High School student. These “Super-Charge Funds” are in addition to the Foundation’s existing matching funds program and will be available until the pool of funds is depleted.
If you are interested in sponsoring a scholarship for Elkhorn North High School students, please contact Genice Chochon at gchochon@elkhornfoundation.org. (Paperwork to establish new scholarships must be finalized by October 1st in order to be offered to seniors graduating the following May).
